Short Story Example | In The Year 2050 As a little kid I was taught, There is nothing new under the sun, and I believed that until yesterday. Yesterday was like any other day, except the fact that I was on midterm break. This meant no work, all sleep and all play! As I basked into the freedom of having my midterm break, my stomach started to growl, which meant it was lunch time. As I went into the kitchen to fix lunch, I heard a funny noise. The noise sounded like a thousand bubble gums popping at once. So I went out to the backyard to see if it was some of the rowdy boys from around the corner, playing a prank on me. And to my surprise there was no one there, so I followed the noise to see where it was coming from, and it was coming from my neighbors backyard. As I stood there with my neighbor called Mario, I was astonished to see he had a flux capacitor. He told me he had built a time machine and to my surprise it looked like one Ive seen on a movie. So I asked, Mario does it really work? He replied with excitement, Yip, Ive been to the year 2050, a lot has changed because they live underwater, and I saw your great granddaughter, shes doing fine! I stopped him and looked at him like he was crazy. So he replied and said You dont believe me huh? Come with me and Ill show it to you! So he turned on the flux thing and a hole appeared with some purple foam coming out of it. I was scared so he told me to count backwards from 5, as he held my hand; we stepped into the time machine. 5à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦4à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦3 Were here! he said. The machine had stopped and automatically I felt the atmosphere had changed. Mario said Welcome to 2050! This is our back yard! Honestly, it wasnt a pretty sight; the place where we lived looked like an empty street on the Boulevard of Broken dreams. The sky was bleak, smoke and fog filled the atmosphere. It was as though everyone had moved away 20 years ago and a category four hurricane had resigned their ever since. So I turned to Mario and asked him, Where is everyone? He replied like I said, they live underwater. as he turned around and showed me everything, he said This is why there down there. So I asked, How is it that theyre living down there? He explained to me that the Chinese had built huge see-through domes for each country as gifts, because land had become too dangerous for humans to live on. So I started asking Mario so many questions like, What do they eat? How do they dress? How do they live? How do they travel? He laughed at me and said Ill just take you down there so you can ease up on all the questions. Okay, I said, as we entered the time machine again. In the split of a second we were there. I was prepared to drown because I cant swim and I was also prepared to not being able to breathe, because we were going under water. But to my surprise I was breathing the freshest air I had ever breathed, and this was the most beautiful place my eyes had ever seen. The grass was green and pretty, there were coco plum trees everywhere, and the streets were paved with the pink part of the conch shell. It was like being on a up to date family island. As the sleek cars zoomed pass Mario and I. I turned to Mario puzzled and confused, and told him I thought by 2050 cars would be flying. He replied No not as yet, that happens in the year 3000. But these cars are better than the cars we have at home. I asked him Why do you think that? He said Because these cars runoff water. My mouth dropped. He laughed and said Pick up your lip! I need to show you something, its almost time to go back home. As we hurried, we passed really tall sky scrapers with extra big green domes that were rotating; they looked like they could be homes. So I asked Mario, Are these homes? He said No, these are farms! So I replied, If these are farms, what do their houses look like? He replied Well, they have smart homes, so however they want their house to look, thats exactly how the house will fix itself. Then he said Look!!! as he pointed to a lady, This is what I wanted you to see!! Look at that lady, what do you think shes doing? I replied Walking. He said Nope, look at her again. So I looked. The only thing I saw was a lady that was walking and she had futuristic clothes, pretty bands on her hands and shades. He said She is either surfing the net, on a phone call or checking her messages. So I asked him, How? He explained to me that, the band that she has on her hands is connected to her phone which is at home and she can see her messages anytime as long as shes looking into glass. Her shades are actually her computer. I looked at him funny and then looked at the lady and I said No that cant be, because she isnt moving her hands to select anything. He said She doesnt have to, because her eyes will do all the selecting. Also with her shades she can travel. So I replied, Duh I know that, because at home we can travel with are shades too, you forget we usually is have them in our bag or on our face aye? He laughed and said No, in 2050 their shades can teleport them to where ever they want to go, she just have to select the place with her eyes. Oh! I replied. He then said I have to carry you home before our parents come. But we can come back next week so you can see where your great granddaughter lives. I smiled because I was so excited. So as we stepped into the time machine, and I told him I truly enjoyed my day in the year 2050.

The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of a country is commonly defined as the total market value of all final goods and services produced in a country in a given year. The fact that it is measured regularly and quite consistently in practically all countries of the world allows a direct comparison of the standard of living in individual countries. The frequent measuring also makes it possible to quickly recognize changing trends. For example, it is used to determine whether an economy is growing faster or slower than in the previously measured period and to compare it with other economies in the world. When GDP is calculated in relation to the population of a country, one speaks of the average GDP per capita. This is often used as an indicator of a country’s standard of living. However, as a measure of the standard of living in a country, GDP has its limitations and shortcomings. ? It does not differentiate between economic output that actually benefits the population and economic bads in a country, such as, for example, expenses for warfare, pollution-producing industries, etc. It does not include unreported activities such as illegal trading or black-market labour. ? It does not reflect non-market activities such as unpaid housework, childcare, and care for the elderly at home, community services or similar activities. The distribution of wealth within a country can be very uneven. When there is a high concentration of enormous wealth in a very small group, and the vast majority of a population is very poor, the average income may be relatively high, although the standard of living of the majority population is low. GDP can only measure the material standard of living, without taking into account the quality of life as perceived by each individual, which cannot be standardized across a population or countries. ? Economic output can increase due to technological advances requiring less employment, thereby decreasing the employment ratio. ? The age distribution within a country may be such that a relatively small group of working-age people have to support a large group of old people, resulting in a lower employment rate and consequently a lower standard of living.

When studying a language, students are not always given examples of real conversations that involve unique questions and answers. Magazine and newspaper interviews capture nuanced words and phrases that aren’t in the typical textbook. In short, studying abroad is the best way to improve your language skills.

The stories of the Yellow Wallpaper and Story of an Hour are both stories that have deep meaning, and many hidden symbols. In both stories there is a woman who in some way is oppressed by some outside force and must find a way to overcome this oppression. While in both stories the main charcter goes through a different ordeal, The main theme behind these events are the same and the two experiences can compare to eachother. the events match in both women we oppressed by men and portrayed as the weaker sex, both the woman find a way to cope with the situation, and both stories have a tragic and ironic ending. In the case of The Yellow Wallpaper one critism stated Even if Jane does not consciously reco gnize the socially oppressive character reflected by the physical pattern of the wallpaper, her observation that â€Å"I fancy it is the pattern that keeps her so still† indicates her awareness of the futility of any attempt made by the woman in the wallpaper, or herself, to receive any relief, understanding, or satisfaction from this oppressive Order. (Suess pg.86) He comes to realize that the answers she is looking for she will not be able to find being trapped in the room. Just as the woman she now sees trapped in the wallpaper can not be happy in there. In The Story an Hour however, Mrs. Mallard takes a different approach to dealing with her current situation. After the death of her husband as mentioned before she is relievef and states that she is now free. The way she begins to deal with the situation is that she realizes that she can now live her life for her. unlike Jane the answers she was looking for came in the form of her husbands death. Chosen character in the play Essay An Inspector Calls is set in the year 1912 but was written by J.B. Priestley in 1940, during the Second World War. Priestley had witnessed the suffering, torture and discrimination of the working-class people who lived throughout the two World Wars and the years that lay in between. Priestleys experiences had influenced him to expose his thoughts and opinions during the course of the play. These are expressed through the various roles played by the Inspector. Arthur Birling an affluent businessman, is holding a family dinner to celebrate his daughters engagement to Gerald Croft, who himself is the son of a very prosperous businessman. Into this scene intervenes a police Inspector, investigating the suicide of a young working-class woman.  The Inspector plays very important roles in this play. Without the Inspector, none of the characters encounter with Eva Smith (or otherwise known as Daisy Renton) would have ever come into the open. For this very reason the Inspector is known as the catalyst for the events of the play.  Whilst Birling is summing up his views on politics and society, the Inspector rings the bell and cuts off Birlings speech mid-way and Birling never gets to finish his speech. that a man has to mind his own business and look after himself and his own and-   This has a major significance in the play, as it shows that an average man like the Inspector can make someone as powerful as Birling, completely powerless. It also shows that the Inspectors points and beliefs were more valid and humane than Birlings capitalistic views and beliefs  The first impression of the Inspector is described by Priestley in terms of massiveness, solidity and purposefulness, this represents that he is an unstoppable force within the play.  He speaks carefully, weightily and he has a disconcerting habit of looking hard at the person he addresses. This symbolises the fact that the Inspector thinks carefully before he talks and that what he says has a valid reason. It also gives the impression that the Inspector sees through the person to the real person beneath. Before the Inspector arrives, Birling had been setting out his views, every man must only look out for himself, but the Inspectors role proves that this isnt the case. The Inspector also plays the role of a Socialist against a Capitalist. The Inspector is against Capitalistic views because he is not just concerned about himself but about others as well.  So you used the power you hadto punish the girl because she made you feel like that?  One of the most essential roles played by the Inspector is that he doesnt only just confront each character but he also forces each character to admit the truth. The irony that lies here is that the Inspector doesnt find out anything that he doesnt already know. The Inspectors intention is to merely get them to see what they and the others have done and to make them feel responsible for Eva Smiths (or Daisy Renton) death. The Inspector has a very specific technique of carrying out his interrogation.  One person and one line of enquiry at a time, Its the way he likes to work because otherwise, theres a muddle His role here as a policeman is quite unusual as compared to that of a usual policeman because a typical policeman wouldnt have insisted on interrogating one person at a time. Moreover, a typical policeman would have interviewed each person separately, this goes to prove that the Inspectors aim was to show the others what they have done. Another unusual quality that lies within the Inspector is that he is more concerned about criminal law than moral law. But the Inspector deeply believes moral values. He tells the characters:  If you are easy with me, Im easy with you He his here conveying that that you should do unto others as you would want them to do unto you. He also shows that he has love and pity for those who are willing to accept their responsibility, however not to the extent that of forgiveness.
